Reno, NV

We are back home in Reno after a great trip across the wide open spaces of Nevada.  We decided to try a different route back and see what Rachel, NV looked like (more on that later).  Left early Saturday and made a few stops for gas and food before heading north on I-15.  At first glance that might not make sense since it heads northeast and we live northwest, but it was the start of new route. As we were heading north on US 93 about 30 miles north of Las Vegas, we saw a sign for Coyote Springs Golf Course.  Intrigued, we turned around (takes a while to slow down from 70 mph) and went down the side road. Turns out that it is a Jack Nicklaus course which opened in 2008 and was supposed to be part of a planned development out in the desert.  The developers got involved in a water rights fight with Clark County and they are still working on getting the development built.  Talked with the people there about the golf course and decided it was too crowded o...

Friday in Las Vegas

This morning after breakfast at the Cracked Egg on the west side of Las Vegas, we decided to go over to Lake Mead which, of course, is on the direct opposite side of the city.  Surprisingly enough, we took Lake Mead Blvd which runs directly across the entire city from west to east and ends up at Lake Mead (gee, I wonder why they named it the Lake Mead Blvd). Crossing from the west side to the east is like going through a microcosm of the social strata of Las Vegas.  I'll leave it to your imagination which is the better side.  When you leave the city limits of Las Vegas, you immediately cross into the desert and the stark landscape for which Nevada is noted.  Climbing over the pass, you can see the blue-green patch of Lake Mead in the distance.  It has really dropped over the past years.  This can be noted by the Las Vegas Cove boat launch which is about a half mile from the nearest water. We had not come into Lake Mead from the north side for ...

Las Vegas

Left Reno early this morning for Las Vegas.  We're going to join several thousand of our closest friends at a Dan Marino event at Caesar's Palace Saturday evening. Normally, we go through Fernley (gas is cheaper there).  However, this time we took a cut-off route through the Reno Tahoe Industrial Park which is about twenty miles east of Sparks.  Over the past several years, a lot of major players have built huge facilities out there.  Walmart warehouse, Switch Data Center, Tesla battery facility, Petco distribution center, etc.  It has created thousands of jobs out in the middle of the desert half-way between Sparks and Fernley.  One of the side benefits was a road that cut over to US 50 and US 95 south.  Always fun to drive through RTIC and see what new facilities are being built. Driving into Hawthorne, we spotted a herd of mountain goats feeding alongside the road.  They must know they are protected because they didn't even budge when cars ...
